Yup. You can tell this is a vintage photo because that X/19 not only was running but it also was not rusted to shit.

Hey, I'll have you know that my X1/9 is only mildly rusty and still runs fine despite having a dodgy head gasket.

I get the distinct feeling that that's not really helping.

I recall seeing the results of a somewhat more violent contact between similar vehicles several years ago. The X1/9 was reduced to a crumpled ball and the FD actually loaded it on a flatbed in order to continue cutting the driver out at the hospital.

Ooh dear. Must have been a pretty bad one. X1/9s are actually fairly sturdily built. They were designed with stringent US safety regulations in mind.

The US government didn't actually roll out the regulations, but their legacy stands for a number of cars from that era.

Well, apparently it was sturdy enough that the driver only had a broken bone IIRC, once they extricated him from the car.

I think it was a highway-speed head-on with an old pickup - someone must have crossed the center line.

Ouch, that still sounds nasty.

To be honest, I don't much like the idea of crashing in anything. Safe or not.
